Clipboard

Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 8, 2026

Clipboard ("the app") is a clipboard history utility for Mac, iPhone, and iPad operated by Attereon. This policy describes what data the app handles and how. The short version: your clipboard history stays on your devices and, only if you turn sync on, in your own iCloud account. Attereon operates no server for the app and never receives anything you copy.

What the app stores

When you copy something on your Mac, the app saves it to a history on that device: the text, link, or image you copied, the time, the name of the app you copied it from, and the name of the device. This history lives inside the app's sandboxed storage and is protected by the same disk encryption as the rest of your Mac.

There is no size limit on what the app keeps. You choose how many items to retain in Settings, and you can pin items so they are never pruned.

Passwords and concealed items

Password managers mark copied passwords as concealed. By default the app keeps these in your history so you can paste them again. You can turn this off at any time in Privacy settings, after which the app skips anything marked concealed. Items marked as transient by other apps are never recorded.

iCloud sync

If you enable sync, the app stores your history in the private database of your iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit service. Everything you copied is written to encrypted fields whose keys are held only by your devices, so the content is end-to-end encrypted. Neither Attereon nor Apple can read it. Only housekeeping data such as timestamps, item type, size, and device name is stored in the clear so the app can sort and organize your history.

Sync uses your existing Apple Account. The app never sees your Apple credentials, and Apple'sprivacy policy governs iCloud itself. Turn sync off in Settings at any time; the app then keeps working with local storage only.

The iPhone and iPad app, keyboard, and AutoFill

On iOS the app reads the system clipboard only while it, its keyboard, or its AutoFill extension is open, and only after you grant the permission iOS asks for. The Clipboard keyboard requests "Allow Full Access" solely so it can read the clipboard and share your history with the app. It does not record what you type, and it uses the network only for iCloud sync. Custom keyboards are not available in password fields, which iOS enforces.

What we do not do

  • We do not run a server for the app and receive nothing you copy.
  • We do not require an account.
  • We do not collect analytics, usage statistics, or crash reports beyond what you opt in to share with Apple.
  • We do not show ads or use trackers, and we do not sell or share data with anyone.

Optional paste permission on Mac

"Paste directly" lets the app press ⌘V for you after you choose an item. macOS requires Accessibility permission for this. The app uses that permission only to send that single keystroke and never to observe other apps.

Data retention and deletion

Your history is yours to keep or clear. Delete individual items, clear everything from Settings, or uninstall the app to remove local data. With sync on, deletions propagate to your other devices and the records are removed from your iCloud database. You can also delete the app's iCloud data from Settings on any Apple device under your Apple Account's iCloud storage.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new date. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
